Custom Automotive Paint Mixing at O’Reilly Auto PartsMD

Whether you are repairing collision damage, correcting minor defects, small surface touch-ups, or completing a full restoration and refinish, O’Reilly Auto Parts can colour-match and custom-mix the paint you need in the quantity your project requires.

We stock high-quality basecoats, clearcoats, primers, and custom-mixed aerosols from trusted automotive refinish brands. Painting wheels, repairing a bumper cover, or respraying the whole vehicle? Our parts professionals can mix the exact colour you specify to help restore a factory-correct appearance.

About colour matching and fading

Exact matches can be affected by UV exposure, age, and prior refinish work. For these reasons, we cannot guarantee that a small spot repair will blend perfectly with surrounding panels. In many cases, we can improve accuracy with a spectrophotometer reading taken from your panel to approximate a faded or non-factory shade more closely.

Vehicle information needed for paint mixing

Bring the vehicle’s year, make, and model, plus the paint code from the trim plate or information label. With this code, we can colour-match and mix from a few ounces to multiple gallons, depending on your job.

Cannot find the code? We can help locate it or point you to the proper label and code format for your vehicle. If necessary, we can also assist you in using the VIN through a dealership to retrieve the factory paint name and code.

How to find the paint code on a vehicle

Paint code locations vary by manufacturer. The code commonly appears on an information label near the VIN and may include both body colour and trim colour fields.

Frequent label locations include:

  • Driver’s door jamb or the door itself
  • Under the driver’s seat
  • Inside the glove box
  • Under the hood near the radiator support or firewall
  • Trunk lid, trunk jamb, or spare-tire well
  • Centre console
  • Sun visor

Typical abbreviations on labels:

  • C for colour
  • EXT for exterior
  • PNT for paint
  • TR for trim

Many tags list both an exterior paint code and an interior trim code; two-tone vehicles can list more than one exterior colour. If abbreviations are unclear, take a photo of the label and we will confirm the correct code.

If the label is missing or unreadable, locate the VIN (often visible through the windshield at the dash or A-pillar). The selling dealership can run the VIN to provide the original paint name and code. We will then mix a paint that matches that factory specification. When the vehicle has significant fade, a spectrophotometer scan of a representative panel can be used to refine the match for a better blend, especially on aged or previously refinished finishes.

Custom-mixed spray paint and touch-up bottles

In addition to quarts and gallons, our O’Reilly Auto Color stores can custom-fill aerosols and 4-ounce touch-up bottles.

  • Aerosol cans are mixed to flow correctly through the nozzle while maintaining coverage and gloss. We can fill custom colours into single-use aerosol cans for small parts, on-car blends, or DIY projects without spray equipment.
  • Touch-up bottles are ideal for small chips or scratches where corrosion protection is the priority. Because toners are dispensed in very small amounts, micro-batches may not match as precisely as larger mixes, but they are convenient for tiny areas where complete blend-in is less critical.

How much paint can we mix?

As much as you need. We mix from touch-up bottles to gallons:

  • Touch-up bottles: 4 ounces (118 milliliters)
  • Pints : 16 ounces (473 milliliters)
  • Quarts : 32 ounces (946 milliliters)
  • Gallons : 128 ounces (3,78 liters)
  • Custom aerosols typically contain about 11 ounces (326 milliliters) of paint
For most colours, we recommend mixing at least a pint to ensure accurate toner ratios; extremely small volumes may show slight shade variation due to minute ingredient tolerances.
